The One with Imperium

It feels good to finally put up an EXCELLENT book (although The Historian is excellent too) on this review list. If you haven't noticed yet, on the side of my blog I listed some favorites, including my favorite contemporary author, Robert Harris, who wrote the book reviewed here. This was the first novel I read by Harris, and I loved it--just like I have loved every other novel he has written. I only have two of his books that I still have (get) to read. Here is the review:

6. Title & Author: Imperium by Robert Harris (305 pages)
Genre: Fiction--Historical Fiction
Completed: 14 June 2007

Summary & Review:
Imperium is the story of Cicero, one of ancient Rome's greatest politicians, and his rise to the supreme power of Imperium as the consul of Rome. It is a novel, yes, but based on the true events of the man's life, giving it a biographical feel along with the story-telling excitment of fiction.

This novel had the best writing of any currently on this list, and I enjoyed the read. What I found most interesting was how applicable and similar a lot of what occurred those thousands of years ago was to today. Plus, I've always had a fascination of sorts with ancient Rome so it was fun opportunity to learn so much about what it was like during those days. Like usual, here was a quote I enjoyed: "...thus proving what most people already know, that politicians essentially say the same thing over and over again." (10)
